Todd County Passes Budget to Increase Transparency

On December 29, 2009, the Todd County Board of Commissioners passed a budget which goes above and beyond business as usual and takes the first step toward clear and transparent government at the County level.  While there is much work left to be done, the passage of the 2010 Todd County, Minnesota Budget and Management Guideline is a great beginning to meeting the Board’s goal of an open and responsive government.

Typically, the County passes a budget which has nothing more than codes and numbers.  It is nearly impossible to tell from this document what the County is actually doing with public funds.  The Todd County, Minnesota Budget and Management Guideline states for most departments, in no uncertain terms what the County is trying to accomplish, and what methods are being used to achieve that goal.  For example, an individual who is interested in understanding what the Social Services, Income Maintenance Unit is doing, can simply reference the pages in the document and learn!

The County Board is committed to continuing on a path which emphasizes continued and progressive amounts of transparency and public participation in County government.  Please take some time to review this document and feel free to direct your questions and comments to your County Commissioner or the Todd County Administrator.

The County Board and Staff of Todd County welcome your opinions!
