Disasters strike anytime and anywhere. It takes many forms – a tornado, flood, winter storm, fire, a hazardous spill or acts of terrorism. To prepare for these disasters, emergency management can be defined as the coordination and integration of all activities necessary to build, sustain, and improve the capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from or mitigate against threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other manmade disasters.

Winter Hazard Awareness Week

November 9 through November 13, each day of the week a different topic is covered. Winter weather can be a killer in Minnesota – literally. For tips, planning materials and more go to www.winterwearther.state.mn.us this web site includes information and links from 10 different agencies.

Weekly Topic:

Monday: Surviving ice storms, blizzards and sub-zero temperatures; winter weather watches and warnings; wind chill chart.

Tuesday: Safety on the, snowmobile safety; hypothermia, frostbite; safe kids outdoors.

Wednesday: Winter fire safety, holiday fire safety; using alternative heat sources; smoke detectors.

Thursday: Indoor air, including carbon monoxide, radon, asbestos, mold and alternative heaters; winter travel and insurance issues.

Friday: On the road – auto safety, snowplows, road conditions, winter driving tips, winter car survival kits, accessing 911 on a cell phone.
